One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

About Our School Council
W.O. Mitchell School is supported by a vibrant and involved School Council. Fundraising and advocacy efforts result in enhanced arts residency programs and physical education opportunities. Council also contributes greatly to our technology strategic plan through collaboration on direction and vision, and through the purchase of computers, software, interactive display boards, and most recently a new sound system for our gym. Other school enhancements include the management and maintenance of our school's Garden of Wonder (our outdoor classroom).
Our School Council has played a most significant role in the development and promotion of our new Spanish Bilingual Program.
Council offers many school and community events such as:
- Fun lunches
- Special presentations/Artist-in-Residency
- Off-campus learning opportunities
- Welcome back fiesta
- Year-end Stampede breakfast
- Family Fun Night
- Parent education evenings
Parents and Guardians Welcome
Parent/Guardian volunteerism allows us to offer many field trips, and class and school enrichment opportunities. We welcome all parents/guardians to attend our meetings and ask that you consider playing a role on School Council this coming year. We have a community of talented, kind and caring parents, guardians and community members. Consider what you might be able to offer and know that your efforts, whether great or small, will make a difference in the learning life of our school community.
