Reminder: Annual Volunteer Registration Required for All School Volunteers

To ensure the safety and security of CBE students and staff, all volunteers must be registered with the school each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

The Annual Volunteer Registration Form is valid for the current school year only. All volunteers, including returning volunteers, must complete a new registration form each school year before participating in volunteer activities.

Process: Parents and guardians can register as volunteers through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account. As part of the registration process, all volunteers must review the POPA requirements and sign to indicate their agreement with the conditions outlined in the form.

New This Year: Community members who do not have a child registered with CBE must complete their volunteer registration in person at the school where they wish to volunteer. This change allows school staff to verify that volunteers have reviewed and acknowledged their privacy obligations under Alberta's Protection of Privacy Act (POPA).

Welcome Back from the Learning Commons!

I am excited to welcome students back into the school library for weekly book exchange next week.

Kindergarten students will choose one book of their choice and return the book weekly. Grades 1-6 will choose one English and one Spanish book each week. Students are responsible for these resources and are expected to return their books the following week. If the student is not finished reading their chosen book by their designated library time, they may renew the item. If they have forgotten their book, a reminder will be sent home, and they may return the book the following day. If a book is lost or damaged, a fine will be placed on their CBE account.

The library is open Tuesday through Thursday and exchange times are consistent from week to week.

I can’t wait to welcome back familiar readers and new students into our library this school year. I am happy to help find a beloved story or a new adventure for your reader.

Alien In-Line Skating Residency: September 21 - October  

Dear W.O. Mitchell School families,

Alien In-Line is coming to our school once again from September 21 – October 9, 2026. The instructor will focus on a variety of basic and advanced skating skills. Skills introduced will vary based on students’ abilities. They may include standing on skates (basic position), simple forward motion, several ways to stop, several ways to turn, safe skating strategies, pathway etiquette, and non-aerial jumping.
Instruction time is followed by games designed to apply these skills in a more active setting. Some sessions may also end with a period of free skating time, often accompanied by music.

Skates

A set of floor-friendly adjustable skates will be provided. Sizes range from US Child’s 11 to US Men’s 10.

Safety and Protective Gear

Alien In-Line provides protective gear for each student, including knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, and a helmet. The program is very strict about requiring all protective equipment to be worn at all times. Students are also taught the importance of using protective gear while skating.

Helmets and Head Lice

Alien In-Line requires ALL STUDENTS to wear a certified helmet at all times while on skates. While certified helmets will be provided, we are aware that sharing helmets can contribute to the spread of head lice. We recommend that students bring their own helmets from home. Acceptable helmets include bike, skateboard, and hockey helmets. Football, BMX, ski/snowboard, or other types of helmets are NOT permitted.

For health reasons, students without socks will NOT be allowed to participate. Please ensure your child brings a pair of socks for each session. 

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, your child will bring home a form titled Acknowledgement of Risk and Consent of Parent or Guardian. Please review, sign, and return this form to the school by Wed. Sept. 16. This form is required for your child to participate in this activity. Please see the table below for your child’s skating dates.

A fee of $12.00 per child has been added to PowerSchool. This fee will cover the cost of instruction. The W.O. Mitchell Parent Society is subsidizing a portion of this fee to help reduce costs for families.

Use of Personal Mobile Devices (PMD) in Schools for K-9 Students

Overview:

CBE’s “Away for the Day” guidelines apply to Kindergarten to Grade 9 students and aligns with Ministerial Order #014/2024: Standards for the Use of Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media in Schools. These guidelines will be communicated with parents and guardians each school year.

Storing Personal Mobile Devices:

Personal mobile devices brought to school must be powered off or set to silent mode and stored out of sight in student lockers, backpacks, or other designated areas. Students are not permitted to use social media applications via CBE networks on PMDs or CBE-owned devices inside the school during the school day.

Theft & Responsibility

Students who choose to bring personal mobile devices to school do so at their own risk. The security and storage of these items is the sole responsibility of the owner or user. CBE assumes no responsibility for the safety, security, loss, repair or replacement of student PMDs.

Communication Between Students and Parents

Parents are asked to refrain from contacting their child/student on their PMD during the school day to avoid unnecessary distraction. Parents can contact the school office who can facilitate contact with their child/student during the school day, if needed.
