Te Gustaria Saber? Jan. 29 - Feb. 2 | Report Cards, Book Fair, Registration, Science Fair, Fees, Fun Lunches, School Council

Queridas familias,

We have had an amazing week at WO Mitchell School! Students are busy and engaged in their work, including clubs at lunch time!

Report Cards

By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you.

What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card

CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:

  • Fall 2022 start:
    • Mathematics (K-3)
    • English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
    • Physical Education and Wellness (K-6)
  • Fall 2023 start:
    • Mathematics (4-6)
    • English Language Arts and Literature (4-6)
    • French Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
    • Science (K-3)

In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.

Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher.

Scholastic Book Fair

We will be hosting our Scholastic Book Fair on March 19-22. More details will be forthcoming.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 Registration

We held our Open House last Thursday, and had over 60 attendees. Our Kindergarten and Grade 1 registration opened on January 15, 2024. Our current KG students do not need to re-register. If you know of families who are looking for a Spanish Bilingual school, please let them know to check out our webpage for more information.

Science Fair and Judges

Students in grade 4 and 5 have been working on their Science Fair Projects. The fair will take place Thursday, February 1 at 5:30pm at the school.

Lunchroom and Field Trips Fees

Parents, please be aware that the noon supervision registration is open. If your student stays at school over the lunch program, please register at MyCBE. As well, all school-based fees will be populated in this portal as events happen. Please take note of the fees to pay them in a timely manner.

Fun Lunches

The next Fun Lunch will take place on February 20 from Coco Brookes Pizza.

WO Mitchell School Council

WO Council helps connect parents to the school and provides additional learning opportunities for all students. There are many ways to get involved that do not require you to hold a position on council. If you would like more information about getting connected or volunteer opportunities, please send an email to womparents@gmail.com The next meeting will be taking place on February 27 at 7pm. This will be an online meeting via Microsoft Teams. The Grade 3 team will be presenting for this meeting.

With gratitude,

Erick Noriega,
Principal
