Queridas familias,
Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that your family had a chance to rest and recover over the week.
Extra Clothing
We have approached the season when everything has begun to thaw (despite today’s snow!). Please ensure that your student is dressed appropriately for the weather, including rubber boots when needed. In addition, please send some extra clothes with your student so that they can change if needed.
Precautions for the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8
On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m. We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner. During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we would like to invite all students to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child. Schools will have students involved in supervised indoor activities.
If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.
For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.
If you have further questions, please contact your school office.
Havana Cuban Dance Residency
With the amazing support of our Parent Council, we have an upcoming physical education residency. Due to conflicting schedules, we have changed the dates for the residency. It will now take place from April 8-12 and April 22-26. Students will work with Havana Dance Company to learn some Latin dance moves. Over this time, we ask that students come prepared to participate in the dancing residency and that they wear clothes that will allow them to comfortably move in.
Spring Musical
The Spring Musical is quickly approaching! Students in Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be performing on Wednesday April 17. Please mark your calendar if you wish to attend.
Lunchroom and Field Trips Fees
Parents, please be aware that the noon supervision registration is open. If your student stays at school over the lunch program, please register at MyCBE As well, all school-based fees will be populated in this portal as events happen. Please take note of the fees to pay them in a timely manner.
Fun Lunches
The next Fun Lunch will take place on April 18 from Edo Japan.
WO Mitchell School Council
WO Council helps connect parents to the school and provides additional learning opportunities for all students. There are many ways to get involved that do not require you to hold a position on council. If you would like more information about getting connected or volunteer opportunities, please send an email to womparents@gmail.com The next meeting will be taking place on April 23 at 7pm. This will be a hybrid meeting in person and via Microsoft Teams. The grade 3 team will be presenting during this meeting.
With gratitude,
Erick Noriega,
Principal
