Queridas familias,
It's been a real pleasure to work with the students and staff at W.O. Mitchell school this week. I visited all of the classrooms and it is so nice to see our students engaged in rich tasks every day. The students are working hard at expanding their Spanish language skills. Teachers are developing great routines with their students and establishing relationships with all of them.
Good questions to ask your child at the end of the day: tell me about the highlight of your day; what did you learn/practice in math today; tell me about the book you read/your teacher read today; what game did you play at recess?
Have a wonderful weekend!
Con gratitud,
Sra Lucie Lejeune,
Acting Principal
School Absences
Please remember to call the attendance line to let us know of your student’s absence – 403 777 6100 ext. 1. This not only helps us as we complete daily attendance but is also a security concern in the case of emergencies. Just a gentle reminder to keep your students home if they are not feeling well.
Drop-off and Pick-up Safety
As we begin the school year, we would like to have the safety of our students and families in mind. Please remember to use the cross walks close to the school and not jay walk across the street. In addition, drivers, please ensure that when you park, you respect the neighbors’ properties by not blocking driveways or garages. As well, please remember to leave the required 5m distance between corners/intersections and crosswalks. As well, please do not use our parking lot for drop-off and pick-up. Over the year, we will seek assistance from our partners at the Calgary Police Services.
School Bus Safety
If your child takes the bus, it is advisable that you stick to that routine. Our experience is that children who know routines demonstrate increased confidence because they know what to do. If your child is not going to take the bus, please advise the classroom teacher of the pick up plan. In order to keep with routines, it is requested that you pick up your child directly from his/her bus. Sometimes, children come to school saying that they are being ‘picked up’, yet the school has no information. To avoid end of day confusion and to ensure child safety, we will put any child without information directing otherwise, on the bus. Thank you for adhering to this communication protocol.
Non-Regular Pickup
If you do plan to pick up your normally bussed child, please be at the school by 3:45 pm and wait for him/her at their bus. If a child does not have a note that they are being picked up, and you are not at the bus at dismissal time, we will put the child on the bus. Buses pull out at 4:00 pm sharp.
Kindergarten Bus Riders
Just a reminder, parents are responsible for ensuring their child’s safety to and from their bus stop. Parents/Guardians are required to be at the stop to meet kindergarten children; our drivers will not let an unmet kindergarten student off the bus. Please keep emergency contact information (e.g., cell phone numbers) where it is easily accessible by your kindergarten student. If you have missed the bus, drivers will often offer the courtesy of driving by the stop again at the end of the route and/or trying to contact the parent(s). If this is unsuccessful, they will return to the school with your child. Please note that substitute drivers normally follow the same processes.
Terry Fox Run
Terry Fox Run will take place on September 22 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We still require volunteers for the event. Please contact Srta. Imperadeiro (smimperadeiro@cbe.ab.ca ) for details.
Last year we raised an amazing $2,732.10 for the Terry Fox organization. Our goal this year is to raise $2,900. This week, we collected $215.05. We will continue collecting Toonies for Terry from students until September 22.
Online donations can also be made to the Terry Fox organization through the School Webpage link: https://schools.terryfox.ca/98255
MyCBE Account
This year the CBE will be using SchoolEngage to complete some of the necessary yearly forms. In order to access SchoolEngage, you will require a MyCBE account. If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help refer, to MyCBE - Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video). The forms found in SchoolEngage include: Demographic Verification 2025-26 and Annual Authorization 2025-26. If you plan to volunteer this school year, you can also fill out the Volunteer Registration Form. Please ensure that these forms are completed by September 15, 2025.
Meet the Teacher Afternoon
Please join us on September 26 for our annual Meet the Teacher event. This is an informal opportunity to meet your homeroom teachers and build community at the school. This year, the School Council has coordinated with YYC Food Trucks to be on site and will be available from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Teachers will be in their classroom from 2 pm to 3 pm to meet families. There will be two 20-minute information sessions in your student's homeroom. The first will start at 2 pm, and the second will start at 2:30 pm. From 3:00 to 4:00 pm, you are invited to stay for the School Council and Parent Society AGM.
A reminder that if you would like any information about our School Council or Parent Society, or would like to volunteer with them, you can reach them at: womparents@gmail.com
