Spanish Bilingual Program
As of 2014, W.O. Mitchell is officially an International Spanish Academy. All students enrolled in the Spanish Bilingual Program are supported by teachers who are fluent in English and Spanish. We have a rich literacy program that supports learning all content areas in both languages, English and Spanish. The program is enriched with opportunities to experience the diverse cultures of the Spanish speaking world.
Our Focus & Approach
International Spanish Academy
¿Quiénes somos? Our school is an International Spanish Academy! The International Spanish Academy program is an educational initiative of the Ministry of Education of Spain that complements the Calgary Board of Education's vibrant Spanish Bilingual Program by connecting schools from across Alberta and the United States. It provides students with opportunities to acquire and maintain language skills in Spanish and English and develop global citizenship through rich intercultural encounters.
Homework
At W.O. Mitchell we continue to communicate and work together with students and their parents to build success in learning. CBE Administrative Regulation 3066 – Homework, outlines the nature and amounts of home study recommended as follows:
Division I: The motivation which comes from parental interest in children's school work can be valuable to a child. Parents and teachers should encourage children to read from books suggested by the school. Pressures can bring about negative results. No formal assignments shall be made, but from 5 to 10 minutes of systematic study per night is recommended.
Division II: Formal assignments may be given at the discretion of the teacher, particularly for pupils who need special attention or help, but in general, assignments should be of the reading or study type. Parents should be made aware of the teacher's general requirements with respect to home study. No school requirement should exceed 20 minutes in length.
